ASHRAE BC welcomes Dan Mauk from Flow Environmental Systems and Nick Farina from Johnson Barrow for our September dinner meeting.

 

“Decarbonizing Heating and Cooling: The Promise of CO₂ Heat Pumps” will explore how natural refrigerants, particularly R-744 (CO₂), are shaping the path forward as regulations tighten and the demand for sustainable, low-carbon solutions grows.

 

Key discussion points will include:

  • The impact of refrigerant regulations and phase-downs

  • Advantages of CO₂ heat pumps in new construction and retrofits

  • Cold climate performance and high-temperature delivery capabilities

Dan is a Sales Engineer with the Flow Environmental Systems Innovation Lab, where he supports projects focused on CO₂-based heat pump technologies to accelerate building decarbonization. Flow’s work centers on developing efficient, fossil-free heating and cooling solutions that leverage natural refrigerants, promote electrification, and help organizations meet evolving environmental and regulatory needs.

 

Nick is a Senior Sales Engineer at Johnson Barrow Inc. with over 20 years of experience in the HVAC and energy management industry. Nick brings expertise in sustainability, district energy, and renewable energy strategies where his work has focused on retrofit applications and energy management projects.
