Existing Buildings - Mechanical Challenges and Decarbonization Opportunities

  • Italian Cultural centre 3075 Slocan Street Vancouver, BC, V5M 3E4 Canada (map)

ASHRAE BC welcomes our own Stephen Kooiman to our May meeting. Retrofitting existing buildings plays an important role in delivering on commitments made to reduce our carbon emissions. Existing buildings have unique challenges to address when considering capital planning, stakeholder buy in, technical challenges and implementation considerations when working in an occupied facility. This presentation will present practical approaches to address the challenges and will present case studies demonstrating successful projects with significant realized carbon reductions.

Stephen Kooiman P.Eng, M.A.Sc. is a principal and mechanical team lead at Prism Engineering, Senior mechanical Engineer and past ASHRAE BC President. He is experienced in designing HVAC, plumbing, boiler and steam plants. Stephen has experience in conducting and leading multidiscipline teams in detailed energy studies, building condition assessments, climate vulnerability risk assessments and implementation projects. He leads an award winning team of engineers at Prism Engineering reducing energy, modernizing systems and decarbonizing existing buildings in Western Canada.
